In normal atmospheric conditions, Bitumen and water can't mix and will separate instantly. Emulsifiers are specialty chemicals used to stabilize the fine dispersion of bitumen droplets in water.

These additives are used to modify the emulsion residual bitumen characteristics (ductility, ring and ball…) or to improve the applications performance of such emulsions (mix cohesion, treatment duration…).

 Adhesivity is defined as the capacity of one binder to remain covering one aggregate without stripping under water or traffic requirements. Adhesion promoters improve the adhesive bond aggregate - bitumen which in turn enhances the long-term performance of the pavement.
